Mom would get up with dad and make a full breakfast for him every day, then he would be out the door by half past four. His day was long and hard. He wouldn’t get home until around 4:30 or 5 in the afternoon. I was always so happy to see him. I used to wait until he pulled into the driveway and I would often hide in his closet. His routine was to always come in and change his clothes and I would jump out at him and scare him. I’m not sure if he knew it was going to happen, but he made the most out of it and I loved it. It’s one of my favorite memories with my dad.
One day when I was very young, in a fit of rage, Carol told me mom had been married and divorced before dad. I was devastated. You poor thing She dragged me to dad’s closet and pulled out the safety lock box, which was never locked to my knowledge, and there were all the divorce papers. The reason for the divorce, grounds of desertion. I learned many years later that he had a drinking problem and disappeared for a year. I guess another abandonment, this time from a man she obviously loved dearly.
Carol was born on November 18, 1946. Her mom was Beth and her dad was Ralph Gordon, Betty’s brother. She was the middle child, with an older brother Kenneth and a younger sister Susan. It was the summer of 1948 when Ralph was killed in the construction accident. I can only sit and ponder what that family, well in fact the whole Gordon family felt. But what I find really interesting is that her birth mother, Beth, really didn’t want Carol. Kenneth and Susan were kept together, Carol was sent to live with my mom and dad.
While you were playing you started sneezing…and sneezing…and sneezing and the amount of mucous coming out of you was not only huge but at a frightening pace You kept choking and coughing and sneezing. Your aunt came running with some paper towel or something like it but it was useless. Whomever she had been talking to one the 54 porch came running out with a hand towel which was better. You were absolutely scared frozen. I remember thinking that i was going to die but then that feeling went away quickly and I thought I am losing my best friend what am I going to do
